Advocaat tussen de vluchtelingen: a life changing experience

Wereldwijf Willemijn (47) is advocaat en reisde in 2015 en 2016 een paar keer heen en weer tussen Nederland en  Griekenland, een paar keer Lesbos en een keer Idomeni aan de Grieks-Macedonische grens, om met eigen ogen te zien hoe het de vluchtelingen verging en om zo veel mogelijk hulp te bieden. Op Lesbos verleende zij humanitaire hulp, in Idomeni juridische hulp.

Tja, ik ben nu eenmaal advocaat

A Cry for Humanity, dat is de titel van mijn rapport voor de UNHCR. Een rapport van ruim vijftig pagina’s over mijn eerste reis naar Lesbos, mijn bevindingen, mijn frustraties en die van anderen en dat allemaal afgezet tegen loze beloftes en statements van de UNHCR en de EU. Feiten tegenover geschonden toezeggingen. Tja, ik ben advocaat. Als je het me vraagt, kan je het krijgen ook. Ik heb het allemaal opgeschreven op verzoek van iemand die ik via via ken. Mijn kennis zit bij de UNHCR op hoog politiek niveau en dicht op het EU vuur in Brussel. Uiteindelijk is het rapport in delen gebruikt bij een lobby in de politiek in Nederland en daarbuiten, die ik samen met anderen startte. Het leek een klein stapje in de goede richting. Hieronder volgt een stuk uit het rapport wat ik schreef.

A life changing experience

“I volunteered in Lesvos, Greece as of October 16, 2015 until October 24, 2015. For me personally this turned out to be a life changing experience. My journey showed me that I can make a difference for people in need. This experience also turned out to be a great disappointment, to say the least. My journey unfortunately also showed me that the EU, its member states and the UN (including UNHCR and UNICEF) simply turn their back to humanity, to human rights and above all to refugees – no one puts their children on a boat, unless the water is safer than the land -. The international community simply ignores screams for help and screams for humanity by every single refugee and every single volunteer, while more people are dying every day and the numbers of refugees are increasing. This is simply a disgrace. Therefore I wrote this report. A report, based on proven facts and experiences. A report, which confronts the international community with its lack of humanity, solidarity and negligence of human rights. As a lawyer should, I would say.”

Wanhopige mensen met een een schrijnende behoefte aan hulp

“I blame the international community, especially the EU and its member states for its absence on Lesvos. The EU’s response to the refugee crisis is shamefully inadequate. More over the EU and its member states don’t provide emergency aid and life saving assistance and neglect humanity, solidarity and human rights for refugees, people, fleeing from war and persecution, people in desperate need of help.

I also blame the UNHCR for its visible absence and for its lack of putting words into deeds. The conditions for refugees in Greece are far below the international standards, far below humanity, solidarity and human rights require.” 

‘Waar blijft de noodhulp? Waar is de medemenselijkheid? Waar is de solidariteit met mensen in nood? Waar is het respect voor mensenrechten?’

“The Greek authorities are obviously not capable to adequately to receive, register and assist the refugees. The Greek Coast Guard is obviously – although doing its best under the circumstances – not sufficiently capable to provide life saving assistance, while the Greek Coast Guard and other law enforcement authorities should also give priority to stop smugglers and armed men who have been disabling crowded boats and pushing refugees into Turkish waters.

The EU and its member states need to prioritize creating safe reception centers and need to back a coordination structure, which can support an effective humanitarian support. The UNHCR needs to assist and to coordinate NGO’s and volunteers to provide basic services and medical assistance. Also the UNHCR (and/or UNICEF) needs to assist the separated and unaccompanied children, which is a great concern of the UNHCR itself.”
